Subject: Working Class Activism
Workers demonstrate against the city of Los Angeles after 100 workers die in a fire. The workers probably risked losing their own jobs (if they had one) for taking part in this demonstration during the grimmest years of the Depression. Their signs tell it all: Heroes of 1917, Bums of 1933, Fight Against Foreclosures of Small Homes and my favorite: Repeal the Sales Tax, Tax the Rich! Would workers today be brave enough to do what we see this crowd doing? Their political activism is probably what kept these workers going through such hard times. Their solidarity gave them strength.

Subject: The clip in the class struggle!
Interesting pro-union film that shows a rally of angry union members to show support of workers that died, or as they put it, ¡°murdered¡±, in Griffiths Park in Los Angeles. The film says 100 died in the fire, but I can ¡®t find any evidence of that number on the web.. Maximum number I could find was 29.. This is silent, so we don¡¯t hear any speeches, but we see a moment of silence, which is slightly surreal. A moment of silence in a silent film! We see some ¡°orphans¡± as well, And there are some great signs here too. Best part happens at the very end, where we see the ¡®The End¡¯ title card with a company¡¯s slogan, ¡°The Camera In The Class Struggle!¡± WOW. Wonder which company was that?

Silent newsreel clip from the early 30s documenting a labor demonstration against the city of Los Angeles for negligence in the Griffith Park fire, which killed over a hundred workers. This is prime historical footage from the 30s labor movement, if only it had a soundtrack. Some of the protesters' signs are great, though.
